Cazenovia College Debate Society Member, Thomas DeBernardis, to Participate in 12th Annual Great Debate

2012 Apr 6

Cazenovia College's Debate Society will present the 12th Annual Great Debate on April 25, at 7 p.m. in McDonald Lecture Hall, Eckel Hall, on Lincklaen St. in Cazenovia.

Two teams will argue the resolution: The Federal gasoline tax shall be raised to $1 per gallon. Thomas J. DeBernardis, of Utica, N.Y., a freshman majoring in communication studies, is a member of the Debate Society who is arguing in opposition.

The Debate Society seeks to encourage and facilitate public speaking and advocacy. It instructs its members in public speaking and debating skills, prepares members for competition, and encourages an atmosphere of intellectual discourse on campus. The motto of the Debate Society is "Pursuing knowledge through the exchange of differing points of view."

Maureen M. Louis, J.D., associate professor of communication and director of the Communication Studies Program, is also the coach of the Debate Society. Louis says, "Debate is a great opportunity for intellectual engagement, challenge, and growth. It's an honor to be a part of it."
