David Podeswik of the Cazenovia College Debate Society, Takes on Gun Control Issue

2013 Apr 18

The Cazenovia College Debate Society's 13th Annual Great Debate is scheduled for Wednesday, May 1, at 7 p.m., in the McDonald Lecture Hall, Eckel Hall, on Lincklaen Street in Cazenovia. The debate, free and open to the public, will include prepared arguments, cross examination and questions from the audience. This year's topic is timely and much in the news: Resolved: The Federal ban of assault weapons shall be reinstated.

Among the debaters is David Podeswik, of Syracuse, N.Y., who is arguing the affirmative position. Podeswik is a graduate of Liverpool High School, Liverpool, N.Y., and is working toward a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Criminal Justice and Homeland Security Studies, at Cazenovia.

Associate Professor Maureen M. Louis, J.D., is director of the Communication Studies Program and coach of the Debate Society coach, says, "Gun violence and gun control are on the legislative agenda at both the state and national level. In the wake of heart breaking mass shootings and broad discussion across media platforms, it seemed appropriate for the Cazenovia College Debate Society to take up the issue this year."

Louis says, "Participation in Debate requires deep research, a great deal of practice, and the courage to stand and deliver. It is always an honor to coach the Cazenovia College Debate Society and I am proud of my students for taking on a very tough issue with complex constitutional implications."
