Riley Battaglini Displays Visual Art at Cazenovia McDonald's Restaurant

2012 Dec 7

Student work from Cazenovia College's Advanced Advertising Design class is currently on display at the Cazenovia McDonald's Restaurant. The class, taught by Scott Jensen, assistant professor of Visual Communications, participated for the second year in a national student advertising design competition, part of "The One Show," a prestigious advertising awards show in New York City.

"The client provided some basic demographic information, and our students had to do additional research, creative brainstorming and rigorous conceptual thinking to create ads that met the client's goals," said Jensen.

Work by Riley P. Battaglini of Cicero, N.Y., a junior in the Visual Communications Program, will be on display through the winter.

Riley Battaglini says, "Everything in the design field starts with a creative vision. This advertising campaign for Stride Gum shows a process beginning with an idea and ending with a refined project."

"For this project," says Rachel Herman, "I utilized every aspect of the gum packaging as a selling point. Customers would be able to enjoy the gum itself as well as the colorful wrapping it came in."

Emily O'Brien focused on the ' non-stop nonsense' for her designs.

Josh Skibbee says "I wanted to interpret the idea of Stride Gum's new position 'Fuels non-stop nonsense' through playing with gum wrappers and creating nonsense."

Noelle Sippel says, "Advertising is one of the avenues I'm interested in as a career, so the opportunity to do a campaign that Stride commissioned was a great learning opportunity."

Jensen says, "Each year, The One Show Young Ones competition assigns a brief for a specific client, and college advertising design students from all over the world create campaigns for that client. The 2012 Young Ones Competition asked students to create ads and marketing materials for Stride Gum, asking them to help position the product to appeal to a more specific target audience."

"Then they had to execute their concepts in a professional, finished way for the final entries," Jensen continues. "The ability to work on a project for a national client, knowing that the client would actually be reviewing the work and that it could potentially be selected to receive a major award really seemed to inspire the students. I think they did a great job."

This year's competition received nearly 1,500 entries from 93 colleges, representing 14 countries worldwide, and while none of the Cazenovia College student entries were selected as finalists, Jensen believes the experience was still valuable. "Working on the same project as hundreds of other student ad designers certainly provides some incentive to raise the bar, and the opportunity for good work from Cazenovia College to be viewed by the industry creative leaders who serve as judges for this competition each year has some long-term benefits for the students and our program," Jensen said.

Launched in 2005, the One Show Young Ones Competition is produced annually by The One Club, the world's foremost nonprofit organization whose mission is to champion excellence in advertising, youth education and diversity in the field. The competition is open to students from colleges, graduate schools or portfolio schools who are enrolled in an accredited advertising or graphic design program at time of entry.

The Visual Communications Bachelor of Fine Arts Program at Cazenovia College offers students the opportunity to pursue studies in one or more of five different concentrations: general Visual Communications, Graphic Design, Illustration/Animation, Web Design/Interactive, and Advertising Design.
